Explore Tanzania’s Premier Safari Destinations: Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti- 6 Days

Tarangire National Park: A Hidden Gem of Tanzania

Known for its vast elephant herds and towering baobab trees, Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania’s lesser-known treasures. Located slightly off the main safari circuit, Tarangire offers a peaceful and uncrowded safari experience with a rich variety of wildlife.

  • Elephants and Baobabs: Tarangire is famous for its large herds of elephants, often seen grazing under the shade of ancient baobab trees. It’s one of the best places in Tanzania to see these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
  • Unique Wildlife: In addition to elephants, Tarangire is home to zebrasgiraffesbuffaloeslions, and the elusive leopard. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 500 bird species, including the brightly colored yellow-collared lovebird and the majestic Kori bustard.
  • Tarangire River: The park is named after the Tarangire River, which flows year-round and serves as a lifeline for the wildlife during the dry season. Game viewing is particularly rewarding as animals gather around the riverbanks in search of water.
  • Best Time to Visit: The dry season from June to October is the best time for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around the river.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area: A Natural Wonder

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Tanzania’s most famous destinations. It is home to the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive volcanic caldera, and one of the best places in Africa to see a wide variety of wildlife in a concentrated area.

  • Ngorongoro Crater: Often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the Ngorongoro Crater offers some of the most breathtaking views and wildlife experiences in Africa. The crater is home to abundant wildlife, including the Big Fivelionselephantsbuffaloesleopards, and the critically endangered black rhinoceros.
  • Unique Ecosystem: The crater’s enclosed ecosystem creates a microcosm of Africa’s wildlife, where predators and prey coexist in an extraordinary balance. It’s one of the few places to see lions hunting in the early morning or spot rhinos grazing in the crater floor’s grasslands.
  • Cultural Encounters: Ngorongoro is also home to the Maasai people, who continue to live alongside the wildlife in traditional villages. During cultural tours, visitors can learn about Maasai culture and their relationship with the land and wildlife.
  • Best Time to Visit: Ngorongoro can be visited year-round, but the dry season (June to October) offers the best wildlife viewing opportunities, especially for rhino sightings.

Serengeti National Park: The Crown Jewel of Africa

Serengeti National Park is one of the most iconic safari destinations in the world, known for its wide-open plains, teeming wildlife, and the Great Migration, one of the planet’s most incredible natural spectacles.

  • The Great Migration: Every year, over two million wildebeestzebras, and gazelles embark on a perilous journey across the Serengeti in search of fresh grazing grounds. The migration is a breathtaking event that attracts predators like lionscheetahs, and crocodiles, making for thrilling wildlife action.
  • Big Five Safaris: The Serengeti is one of the best places to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino). Lion prides are commonly seen lounging in the sun, while leopards can often be spotted in trees, surveying the land for prey.
  • Diverse Ecosystems: The Serengeti is divided into several regions, each offering a unique landscape and wildlife experience. The Seronera Valley is known for its year-round game viewing, while the Western Corridor offers a chance to see the dramatic river crossings during the migration. The Northern Serengeti is ideal for those seeking a quieter, more exclusive safari experience, away from the crowds.
  • Hot Air Balloon Safaris: One of the most magical ways to experience the Serengeti is from the air. A hot air balloon safari gives you a bird’s-eye view of the stunning landscapes and wildlife below as the sun rises over the plains.
  • Best Time to Visit: The dry season (June to October) is the best time for game viewing and witnessing the Great Migration. The calving season from January to March is also an excellent time to visit, as thousands of newborn animals fill the plains, attracting predators.

Day 4: Full-Day Game Drive at Serengeti National Park

The entire day is dedicated to game viewing in the Serengeti National Park. The areas that you visit will depend on where the migrating herds are. Predators usually follow closely behind the trekking animals and include lions, leopards (in the acacia trees) and cheetahs. During the short rainy season in November and December, the herds move from the hills in the north to the plains in the south. During the longer rainy season from April to June, they return up north. As the migration is completely dependent on the yearly rainfalls, the location of the herds may vary from year to year but your guide will know where to locate the animals and where to see them best. You will spend another night at the lodge.
